Windsnap
While learning about windfall trees in a Nerdy About Nature YouTube video, I began thinking about the importance of both windfall and windsnap and how they can also express some of the issues we face in Canada.
Windsnap occurs when strong winds come against structural weakness, like rot, in a tree trunk and the trunk breaks. As time progresses, this snapped trunk will slowly decay while providing nutrients and shelter to other forest plants and creatures, and new growth will occur. This helps create and maintain a healthy forest ecosystem.
In the past few years, storms have revealed some rot in Canadian history and society. Although the rot is ugly, like a windsnap tree there is great beauty in its revelation for the possibilities it brings. I hope that we will take this opportunity to change and grow into a much healthier society.
